Lorry Key Not Turning — HGV Ignition Faults London
Key stiff in the ignition, won't turn, or the engine won't crank? We diagnose and fix lorry ignition problems on-site across London & Essex — Mon–Fri, 8am–6pm.
When a lorry or HGV ignition key stops turning, the vehicle doesn't move — and a stationary commercial vehicle is a costly problem. There are several distinct causes, and identifying the correct one is essential before attempting any fix. Car Locksmith London provides a mobile diagnosis and repair service for lorry ignition faults across London and Essex. We carry barrel tools, key-cutting equipment, and diagnostic technology to assess and resolve the issue in a single visit — at your depot, yard, or roadside.
7 Reasons a Lorry Key Won't Turn
Not all stiff or seized ignitions have the same cause. Below are the most common faults we see on commercial vehicles, and how we address each one.
Worn Ignition Barrel
The most common cause on high-mileage commercial vehicles. The barrel pins wear down unevenly, meaning the key no longer aligns correctly to release the barrel. It feels stiff, grinds, or simply won't turn at all. We can recode or replace the barrel on-site.
Worn or Incorrect Key
A key that has been used heavily over years will lose the sharpness of its cuts. A worn key fails to lift the barrel pins to the correct height. Similarly, a poorly cut replacement key may have been cut to the wrong depth — causing it to bind. We cut a new key from code to exact factory profile.
Steering Lock Engaged
Particularly common on Mercedes-Benz Actros, Volvo FH, and Scania R-Series. If the steering wheel was left under load when parking, the steering lock can engage fully, jamming the ignition against the locked column. The fix is usually to apply opposite pressure to the steering wheel while turning the key — but we can assist if the lock is seized.
Debris or Contamination in the Barrel
Lorry ignition barrels are exposed to heavy use, dirt, and grime. Debris can pack into the keyway, preventing the key from seating correctly. We clean and service the barrel before deciding whether replacement is needed.
Cold Weather / Frozen Barrel
In freezing temperatures, moisture inside the barrel can ice over, jamming the key solid. Do not force the key — this causes snapping. Allow the vehicle to warm up or apply a quality de-icer to the keyway. If the barrel is damaged from previous forced attempts, we replace it.
Damaged or Bent Key
A key that has been bent — even slightly — will not engage the barrel pins evenly and will feel stiff or jam completely. A bent key is also at high risk of snapping. We cut a straight replacement from factory code.
Faulty Ignition Switch (Electrical)
On some modern trucks, the barrel turns but the engine doesn't crank. This indicates an ignition switch fault behind the barrel rather than a mechanical barrel problem. We diagnose whether the fault is mechanical or electrical and advise on the correct repair.
How We Diagnose & Fix It
On-Site Diagnosis
We check the key profile, barrel condition, steering lock, and ignition switch — identifying the exact cause before recommending any repair. Diagnosis is free.
Key or Barrel Service
If the key is worn or incorrectly cut, we cut a new one from factory code. If the barrel is dirty or mildly worn, we service and lubricate it. In many cases this resolves the fault without barrel replacement.
Barrel Replacement If Needed
When the barrel is beyond serviceable condition, we replace it on-site. We then cut a new key to match the replacement barrel and verify full operation before leaving.
Warning Signs to Catch Early
An ignition barrel doesn't usually fail without warning. Catch these early signs before the key stops turning completely:
- Key becomes progressively harder to turn over days or weeks
- You need to jiggle the key sideways or lift it while turning
- The key gets stuck and requires wiggling to extract after use
- Grinding, clicking, or gritty feeling when turning
- Key turns but doesn't always send the start signal (intermittent starting)
- Key works in the morning but is stiffer after the vehicle has been driven
Any of these is a barrel that is wearing unevenly. Replacing it before it fails completely avoids a roadside breakdown and is significantly cheaper than an emergency call-out.

Frequently Asked Questions
My lorry key turns stiffly but the engine won't start — what's wrong?
A stiff key that still turns physically but won't start the engine usually indicates an ignition switch fault behind the barrel, rather than a mechanical barrel problem. The barrel is the mechanical component; the switch is the electrical part that sends the start signal. We diagnose both on-site and can advise whether a barrel service, switch replacement, or both is needed.
Can you fix the ignition without replacing the whole barrel?
In many cases, yes. If the issue is debris packing in the keyway, we can service and clean the barrel. If the key itself is worn but the barrel is in reasonable condition, cutting a new key from factory code often resolves the problem without any barrel work. We assess the barrel before recommending replacement.
My Actros / Volvo FH key won't turn — could it be the steering lock?
Yes, steering lock jamming is particularly common on Mercedes-Benz Actros and Volvo FH series. When parked, if the steering wheel is under load (front wheels against a kerb, for example), the steering lock can engage fully and prevent the ignition from turning. Try applying gentle opposite pressure on the steering wheel while turning the key. If the lock is seized and won't release, call us — we have tools to free it.
How long does ignition barrel replacement take on a lorry?
Barrel removal and replacement on most lorry and HGV types takes 1–2 hours on-site. If we need to recut a key to match the new barrel or recode the barrel to an existing key, add 30–60 minutes. We aim to complete the full job in a single visit, leaving you with a fully operational ignition.
How much does lorry ignition repair cost?
Diagnosis is free and included in the visit. A new key cut or barrel service starts from £120 + VAT. Full barrel replacement is typically £200–£420 + VAT depending on the make and model. We quote a fixed price before starting — no surprises.
What are the warning signs a lorry ignition barrel is about to fail?
Key is progressively harder to turn over several weeks; you need to jiggle or lift the key while turning; the key occasionally gets stuck and needs wiggling to extract; grinding or clicking when turning. Any of these is a sign the barrel is wearing — best addressed before it fails completely and leaves the vehicle stranded.
