Ford is one of the most popular car brands in the UK, which means Ford car key programming is one of the most common jobs we carry out across London. Whether you drive a Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, Kuga, or a Transit van, this guide explains what’s involved in Ford key programming, what key types Ford uses, and how to get a new or spare key sorted quickly and affordably.

Ford Key Types Explained

Ford has used several different key and immobiliser systems over the years. Understanding which system your vehicle uses helps set realistic expectations for cost and timescales.

PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) — Ford vehicles from approximately 1996

Ford introduced PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) on UK models from approximately 1996. This transponder-based immobiliser system requires the key’s transponder chip to communicate with the PATS module in the vehicle before the engine will start. If the transponder is not recognised — for example, because you’re using an unprogrammed key — the PATS indicator light on the dashboard will flash and the engine will not start.

Ford PATS has evolved through several generations:

  • PATS 1 (1996–2001): Simpler system found on early Fiestas, Escorts, and Mondeos. Less complex to programme.
  • PATS 2 / SECURILOCK (2001–2010): More sophisticated system with encrypted key learning. Requires two working keys to programme a new key via the onboard procedure, OR specialist diagnostic equipment.
  • PATS 3+ (2010 onwards): Used on newer Fiestas, Focuses, Mondeos, Kugas, and Transits. Requires specialist Ford-compatible programming equipment.

Tibbe Key System

The Tibbe key is Ford’s distinctive round-profile key used on Fiestas, Escorts, and other models from approximately 1983 to 2003. Tibbe keys are easily recognisable by their circular cross-section with cuts on the side rather than the traditional serrated edge. Cutting a Tibbe key requires specialist Tibbe cutting equipment — standard key cutting machines cannot cut this profile. We carry Tibbe cutting equipment for all Ford applications.

Remote Keys and Flip Keys

From approximately 2005 onwards, Ford introduced remote keys incorporating the central locking transmitter into the key fob. These need both correct transponder programming and remote synchronisation. Later models use flip keys (blade folds into the fob) or proximity/keyless entry systems.

Ford Intelligent Access (FIA) — Ford models from approximately 2012

The Ford Intelligent Access system (also called the Ford Keyless Entry and Start system in some markets) uses a proximity key that allows the vehicle to be unlocked and started without removing the key from your pocket. FIA keys require more complex programming and higher-specification key blanks.

We regularly carry out key programming for all Ford models including:

Ford Fiesta: The UK’s most popular car for many years. Fiestas span multiple generations — MK6 (2002–2008), MK7 (2008–2017), and MK8 (2017–2023) — each with different key systems. We cover all generations.

Ford Focus: Available with PATS 2/3 systems depending on year. The Focus is one of our most common programming jobs in London.

Ford Mondeo: Including the popular MK4 (2007–2014) and MK5 (2014–2022) generations, both of which use PATS 3.

Ford Kuga: Growing in popularity as a family SUV, Kuga uses the newer PATS 3 system and increasingly Ford Intelligent Access on higher specifications.

Ford Transit and Transit Custom: The UK’s best-selling commercial vehicle. Transit keys use PATS systems with commercial-specific programming. We cover all Transit generations from the pre-facelift MK7 through to the current MK9.

Ford Transit Connect, EcoSport, Puma, Explorer: All covered with appropriate specialist equipment.

The Ford Key Programming Process

Programming a Ford key involves the following steps:

1. Blade cutting: The physical key blade is cut to your vehicle’s lock profile. For Tibbe keys, this requires Tibbe-specific cutting equipment. For standard profile keys, our standard cutting equipment is used.

2. Transponder programming: Using Ford-compatible diagnostic equipment connected to your vehicle’s OBD-II port, we initiate the key learning procedure. This writes your new key’s transponder code to the vehicle’s PATS module. For PATS 2 systems (approx. 2001–2010), this requires either two working keys for the onboard procedure, or our specialist equipment if you have fewer than two working keys.

3. Remote synchronisation (where applicable): If your key includes a remote transmitter, we synchronise it to your vehicle’s central locking receiver.

4. Testing: We confirm the key starts the vehicle, operates the central locking correctly, and (where applicable) that the PATS system recognises the new key without any warning lights.

How Much Does Ford Key Programming Cost in London?

Ford key programming is typically at the more affordable end of the car key programming spectrum:

  • Ford Fiesta, Focus, Ka (pre-2010): £80–£130 for full cut and programme
  • Ford Fiesta, Focus (2010–2018): £110–£160
  • Ford Fiesta, Focus (2018+): £130–£180
  • Ford Mondeo, Kuga (PATS 3): £130–£190
  • Ford Transit, Transit Custom (van): £130–£200
  • Ford with Intelligent Access (keyless entry): £200–£280

These prices include cutting and full programming. We provide a fixed price upfront before any work begins.

Should I Get a Spare Ford Key?

Absolutely — and Ford keys are among the most cost-effective spare key options available. A spare Ford key typically costs £80–£180 depending on model and year, and provides complete peace of mind. Consider:

  • If you lose your only Ford key, the replacement cost is the same as a spare but now you’re dealing with the emergency and inconvenience on top
  • With a PATS 2 system (2001–2010), having two working keys means future additional keys can potentially be programmed using the onboard procedure, reducing costs further
  • Ford is one of the most commonly targeted vehicles for key theft in the UK; having a spare means you’re never completely stranded

Can You Programme a Ford Key With No Existing Keys?

Yes. We can programme a Ford key even with zero working keys present. This requires our specialist diagnostic equipment rather than the onboard programming procedure, but we carry the necessary tools for all Ford models and generations.
