Does my car key have a transponder chip?
After 1995, all vehicles that are sold in the UK are required to contain a passive transponder chip. The more recent Ford models don't use the original fixed programming technique but now have a crypto-coded rolling system which uses a different code each time the vehicle engine is started. When a key is lost or replaced, it should be de-registered from the car's Engine Control Unit computer, meaning it can no longer be used.
